IO gel_food

As I continue to go through my MACNA treats I thought I would continue with some product reviews!  One product that was given out was Instand Ocean Gel Food.  I've never used the gel food before so I'll have to admit I was a little apprehensive to try it out.

packetsLately I've been trying to keep an eye on the types of food I use and what they contain, paying particular attention to the amount of phosphate they contain.  According to the packageing the IO Brine Shrimp Gel food contains 0.05% Min. Phosphorus which doesn't seem like a lot.  Here are the directions that come with the food and some ingredients:

Directions for Use

  1. Separate single serving pouch.
  2. Tear dispensing top.
  3. Slowly squeeze gel in bite size pieces.

Feeding Guide
Feed several times per week as a supplement, but only as much as your fish will consume within several minutes. Once a packet of gel food is opened, it can be safely stored in the refrigerator and used within 24 hours.

With that in mind I'll have to admit I like some of the things that the gel food has going for it.  I really like the fact that the food does not have to be refrigerated and I also really like the fact that there is no prep before using the food.  Rinsing frozen food can be a pain in the butt and I know I get lazy sometimes and just dump the food in.  The real question though is will your fish like it?  So to test it out I took a little video of how my fish reacted to the food:

You can see a couple of frames where the fish spits out a little bit, but I think for the most part the fish like the food.  If your looking for something different to feed you fish it might be worth a look.  Also since fish food can be hit or miss I'd be interested to hear from anyone else who have tried it and what results they got.

When I first fed this stuff the fish seemed to spit it out like skipper said. Lately they seem to be eating most of it though.

I didn't realize it before but if you listen to the video you can hear the emperor angel grunt right around the 20sec mark (right after the food comes in). He is kind of a pig and doesn't like to share  !

I feed the clowns in my refugium more often than I do my main tank and they love this stuff...when i feed them i add just a bit at a time to make sure everything is consumed. Its not going to be as good as a Rods Food, but it is adding "variety" to their diet and they love it.
