great white

The only time most people get to see great white sharks is on TV or in movies.  Well for the lucky people who get to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium they will get a chance to see a live, juvenile male great white shark!  This is the 6th time a great white has been on display at Monterey Bay.  The 4', 7" shark was collected by aquarium staff in waters off southern California, near Marina del Rey, a few weeks ago.  After a stay in a four million gallon ocean holding pen the shark was transfered to Monterey via a 3,200 gallon transport vehicle.  The shark is now on display in the million gallon "Open Sea" exhibit.  Check out this video of the shark:

You might also catch a glimse of the great white in the Open Sea Web Cam.  Thanks to Ruff Waters for the heads up on the story!

I think its nice for people to see one but I do like it one bit as these sharks dont do well in captivity. I have been lucky enough to see them in the wild and it is a wonderfull experiance but i dont condone anything that can hurt any species of fish, specially sharks. I hope they are very successful at keeping him. ( now I dont know the reason they got him so if they got him do to some injury or other nature that he would be better off in captivity fine but I've never seen such a reason except 1 time in san diego)

Gah, I don't blame them for biting the tuna. I would do the same thing.

I wonder how long it will last there!

Until it takes a bite out of one of their tuna, or other (very) expensive animal.
