TOPIC: Breeding My Clownfish...Finally

Breeding My Clownfish...Finally 2 months, 3 weeks ago #12607

Some of you know about my obsession for clowns and anemones, so I decided to take the plunge...

When my gf and I were still renting, I put my onyx perc and ocellaris male in their own tank. It took about 3 weeks and they started spawning like clockwork, of course, in an apartment I had limited space so raising fry was out of the question. Last July we bought a house, so I was thinking time to start breeding and raising the fry; however, getting my pair to spawn again seemed next to impossible. When they would spawn, I would get a really crappy batch, or the idiot male would eat the entire clutch. So, I decided not to do anything until I could actually get them back to laying consistently. I just recently got 2 consecutive spawns, so I decide to order my Rotigrow Complete and rotifers to start a culture. My last clutch hatched last Wednesday, and I saw this morning that I had another clutch nice and big, probably a couple of hundred eggs!

So the rots will be here on Thursday, and I'll get that going just about in time for the fry to hatch. I'm keeping it simple right now, a 10g brooder, 10g hatch, and a 20H growout tank. I have a 40b that I plan to drill and plumb that I will move larger juveniles into and planning on an S. Gigantea to encourage them to seek out a host.

I'll try to take pics of the clutch tonight. This is an older pic of the breeding pair:

Very cool! One of the parts of this hobby that I've always wanted to try but never had the time to do it. I'm looking forward to hearing how things go for you.

Thanks Brad. I'm really anxious to see what the offspring look like, being hybrid and the 2 parents having very different barring patterns and the Onyx percula variant. I'm thinking of trying a couple of batches of fry to see if I get any "cool" barring. I'm also going to add a few pairs of brood stock once I get more comfortable with culturing the rots and raising the fry. I've joined pretty much every breeding forum out there, and have stacks of books so I'm hoping I can keep a couple alive on the first go!

Sounds exciting Brain! Did you also order some otohime? That's supposed to be real good stuff, especially with clowns. I think your supposed to put RotiGrow Omega in the larval/fry tank too, not sure how much of a difference it makes though.

Good luck!

I did order the Top Dressed Otohime A, B1 and B2. From the research I've done and conversations with many of the "big" breeders, Kathy, Doni, Hyperboy, RRCG50 as well as Pickle from some bigger forums, they are all getting amazing results with the Otohime. They've all stopped feeding newly hatched baby brine shrimp(NHBB)as they think it was causing deaths due to the Sudden Fright Syndrome, thinking it being correlated with foods and the fatty acids. I actually ordered the starter kit from Reed's, it wasn't too expensive.

Some horrible cell phone pics of the parents and their brood:

And a box of goodies in my cube!

Re: Breeding My Clownfish...Finally 2 months, 3 weeks ago #12641

Hey good luck! I think the color and bars will look awesome as well.

I have sat down and read through all of pickle and hyperboy's threads and nano-reef... boy did that take a long time.

Took some updated shots of the eggs. My flash nearly washes them out, but you can just see the eye spots forming:

Looking good. The pics of the little guys are hard to get. I did catch a decent one a few weeks ago. I have 5 still going from my first attempt. Hope you get a bunch going. Interested to see what you get with your supplements.

I have been using Rots and Brine and really dont visually see them going after the food. There is so much Rots/Brine mixture in the tank its almost impossible for them not get it in their mouth.

How many clutches have you reared? What's been your survival rate?

Re: Breeding My Clownfish...Finally 2 months, 3 weeks ago #12688

I have had well over 20 clutches but I have only reared one clutch. My survival rate is not great by experienced breeder standards, but I guess most wipe out the first few runs.

I have 5 little guys in there right now. These are the survivors of probably 70? There were a ton when they hatched.

A couple things I have had issues with are salinity and no blackout for the fry to see the rots.. With the small amount of water in there and an air stone going I get a good deal of evaporation. Better about checking and maintaining now. I will also put something along the sides to black out the tank so the fry have an easier time locating rots to eat.
