TOPIC: LED's on a 125 gallon tank???

LED's on a 125 gallon tank??? 1 year 3 months ago #12883

I have a buddy wanting to get into the saltwater hobby, wanting to set up a reef. We are looking at a 125 gallon tank. But he wants to run LED lighting for all the reported benefits of them. Are there any feasable options for a 6 ft tank doing led's? I know nothing about this type of lighting so can offer him no advice. What do I look for as far as brands, intensity(must be able to sustain corals), lengths?

There are a ton of options these days and its only getting better.

I have to say if you like DIY... Justin has shown that aluminum U channel works great as a heatsink. I personally got to touch it and it wasn't even hot. There have been on @ 100% for sometime at that. I would say get some U channel unfinished kind, have four or five drivers then have them maxxed out - 14leds i believe is the most on serial connection. www.rapidled.com/mean-well-eln-60-48p-dimmable-driver/

Of course its feasible, but you two need to come up with a budget before making those kind of decisions. LED, no matter if its the AI Sol, Radion, Apollo or DIY, all are expensive. No way around it. But how expensive are you willing to go? Let us know.

I put 4 sol leds on my 120 in wall from Fish Freaks and they kick ass!! They even have several timmers and lunar cycle and thunderstorms. And yes they are not cheap but well worth the $$ u spend on utilities, and replacement bulbs feom MH. Not to mention the heat from Mh you wont need a chiller with leds.

Thanks for the replies. He is the "plug and play" type of guy so I am sure a DIY is not going to be an option. I myself do not know much about the LED's and am not ready to dive in, but he is thinking that is the way he wants to go. I am down in Sioux City, and will have to check out the tanks at Fish Freaks next time I am down that way.

IM LED's are the way to go. I figure with bulb replacements you can pay and LED system in a short time.
